My Cute Cat Dress Is Really a Dog Harness!

Remember the cat dress I got the other day at the pet shop? I’m going to model it for you today!

I want to point out something about this dress. Even though it looks really pretty and I love it, it’s not exactly a cat dress! It’s really a dog harness! As you can see, it even has a matching leash.

I have a few cute dresses that are actually dog harnesses. But even though they might work as harnesses on dogs, they’re not suitable as harnesses on cats. That’s because dog harness D rings are in the wrong place. Because of the way a cat is built, the D ring (the part where you attach the leash) should be on the upper part of our backs, not too far from our shoulder blades. With dogs, it’s often lower down on the back. That’s an awkward placement for a cat.

Pet harnesses need to be structured for either a dog or a cat (or a bunny or a guinea pig or a lizard — yes, there are harnesses for all these!). Dogs are much stiffer, and their heads are bigger and/ or longer than a cat’s. Plus cat shoulder blades and collar bones are extremely flexible, and with our small heads, we can easily wriggle out of most dog harnesses. That’s why even with the prettiest harness, I always wear my regular harness underneath it. My human wants safety along with fashion, and the safety part comes first.
