Our area has been having a huge rainstorm! So it’s a good thing that the children’s hospital that we visit is only a little over 10 minutes away from us. And the rain wasn’t too bad on the drive over, or coming back.
It wasn’t a busy day there, so we made the most of the visits we had, and I got to spend quality time with the kids I saw. One of the first ones was a little girl with a wrist brace. Her dad was keeping watch over her and her two-year-old sister. They were delighted to see me! I even gave the little girl a high five.
The toddler was sitting on her father’s lap, but eventually she wanted down so she could visit with me. Her attention was all over the place, so at first she barely paid any attention to me. Then she would get moody and start screaming — apparently it was past her nap time. I didn’t mind, but I could see my human was trying not to wince. She was really a nice kid when she wasn’t fussing.
On our way to other patients, we stopped by one exam room where the girl was busy getting fitted with a cast. My human promised to come back with me.
But first we stopped by an exam room with a boy lying on a table with an IV in his arm. His crooked legs and little body were propped up on several pillows and rolled towels and my human saw his wheelchair sitting by the sofa. Reluctantly, she placed me on the table because she didn’t want to disturb any of the props or the IV, but he really, really wanted to see me. He smiled and petted me with his free hand while his mom talked to my human in English and Spanish. It was a really sweet visit, and near the end, his aunt showed up, and then his grandmother. The whole family was there to support him, and the mood was warm and welcoming.
Finally we went back to see the little girl with the cast. She had to stand with her mother holding up the arm in the cast while it dried. So my human put me on the exam table so the girl could easily reach me and pet me. Meanwhile, her mother chatted with my human about life in Taiwan, where she was from.
I had such a nice visit with these kids, and I’m so glad the rain didn’t stop us from going.
Here are some of my other visits to the children’s hospital:
